The climate balance of sports events is dominated by the traffic of spectators getting there and back. And this is no different for Bundesliga matches. In the context of its climate protection activities, the 1. FSV Mainz 05 football club has therefore come up with a series of measures for making the fans’ journeys more ecological. For instance, specific home matches were designated car-free and the club encouraged people to use other means of transportation for getting to the stadium and back. Besides the so-called combo tickets, which can be used for arriving at all the club’s matches, organizers provide additional incentives such as free bike inspections and supervised bike parking spaces. For away matches, supplementary buses and trains are used to take as many fans as possible to the match and back, so their cars stay off the roads. In this way, fans can contribute to lowering emissions.
